WikiAves was created to support the Brazilian online community of biologists and bird watchers. By offering interactive tools, the site enables its users to promote knowledge retrieval, user-to-user communication, publication of Brazilian bird data with a focus on conservation, and the construction of the largest Brazilian bird database on the Internet. Its function is to collect and organize data provided by birders and contributors to turn it into useful and accessible information for beginners, amateurs and professionals alike. For easier access, the site has been divided into two areas: the first is wiki pages, where users can create and edit the content of their pages. The second is the media section where registered users can post pictures and sounds. After media is added, it is rated by other users and the media with the highest ranking is selected and displayed on the wiki pages of the appropriate species and other taxa.
