Description

Wealthy European collectors sought out cassowaries for display in private zoos in the 16th and 17th centuries. Even today, some locals use cassowary feathers for ceremonial headdresses. Young birds are often kept and sold for meat when they are old enough, or used as dowry. There are now fewer southern cassowaries in Australia than giant pandas in China.
