Emerging diseases such as the West Nile virus, which infects wildlife and humans and are actively transmitted between them, require wildlife biologists to assist public health authorities. A collaboration between wildlife scientists and epidemiologists, research on wildlife species addresses the ecological, physiological and behavioral aspects of disease in animals and explains how wild species acquire and transmit disease to humans.
