The Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute are leading the Smithsonian's global efforts to save species, better understand ecosystems, and educate future generations of conservationists. Founded in 1889, the zoo is part of the Smithsonian Institution, the largest museum and research complex in the world. Its two campuses are home to more than 2,000 animals, including some of the world's most endangered species.
